Film Review: Baby Driver (2017)

One of my most anticipated movies of the year, Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver features a getaway driver that finds himself in the middle of a heist that is doomed to fail. Read my review…

Ansel Elgort plays Baby, a getaway driver who had an accident as a young child, as a result of which he suffers from tinnitus and listens to music all the time to drown out the humming. He owes a lot to a crime boss and pays him off as a getaway driver. As he is approaching his last job to pay off his debt, he meets a waitress named Debora played by Lily James, who embodies everything he wants from life outside of a life of crime. check out the trailer.

If you know the name Edgar Wright, you know it because how much fun all his movies always are; i.e. the likes of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and The World’s End. This is no different. I loved this movie so much!! Every single part of the movie contributes to this movie being the most entertaining one of the year so far.

All the performances are brilliant. Everyone seems to be having a lot of fun on screen and the most important thing for me is that all the actors seem to be on the same page and know exactly the kind of tone they are all playing to. Jon Hamm, Lily James, Jamie Foxx and Kevin Spacey are all great. But Ansel Elgort shines the most with his subdued subtlety. He is capable of portraying a very believable getaway driver as well as a fun and music loving guy at the same time.

The action in this movie is absolutely fantastic. The amazing car chase scene driving through the little alley weaving past trucks you see in the trailer is just part of the opening scene. What a way to introduce you and hook you into a movie. The pinnacle of the action for me is a spectacular chase scene at one point in the movie that has me at the edge of my seat.

Finally, and most importantly, by far the best part of the movie is the director Edgar Wright’s decision to incorporate music into the story itself and his choice of music as a whole. Every engine revving, every turn off the road, every gunshot and every decision Baby makes while driving is to the beat of the song that Baby is listening to. This is a genius decision by Edgar Wright and goes to show just how amazing his direction is that he is able to bring it all together to create the most entertaining movie of the year so far.

If I absolutely had to pick a negative, then it would be that the movie took a very small dip just before heading into the final act. If we could just tighten up those 5-10 minutes then this movie is absolute perfection.

Overall, Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver is the most entertaining movie of the year so far. Amazing action sequences and car chases, brilliant performances and masterful use of music incorporated into the story all culminate into a very funny, cool and stylistic movie.

My Score: 4.5/5 – A must watch. I wanted to go back in right after walking out.
