Top 5 movies of 2017 (so far…)

We are now halfway through the year and there has been some good showing on the big screen so far. Here are my top 5 movies of 2017 so far…

5. Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is a big win for the DCEU as a very, very good origin story. It benefitted highly by taking place in a time long before the events of the movies we have already seen in the DCEU. Wonder Woman is the first female-centric superhero movie of the modern era that is so good that it has me wondering why it took so long. You can check out my extended review here.

4. Get Out

Get Out

Get Out is a fantastic movie with amazing performances contributing to social satire with a highly intellectual exploration of racism. An absolutely brilliant directorial debut by Jordan Peele and I now anticipate his future projects with huge expectations. You can check out my extended review here.

3. Okja

Okja

Okja is a poignant look at the sad state of the food industry with great heart in its storytelling. There are many unexpectedly laugh out loud moments to bring relief in an otherwise gloomy and distressing movie. Bong Joon Ho knocks it out of the park once again and brings us a very heartwarming and entertaining movie that has a haunting and devastatingly peaceful ending. In my opinion, this is Netflix’s first great(!) movie. You can check our my extended review here.

2. Baby Driver

Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver is the most entertaining movie of the year so far. Amazing action sequences and car chases, brilliant performances and masterful use of music incorporated into the story all culminate into a very funny, cool and stylistic movie. You can check out my extended review here.

1. Logan

Logan is the Wolverine movie that every single fan has been waiting for. Logan is unlike any other X-Men movie we have seen in that it is not a superhero action movie. This is a much more sombre, deep and dare I say, a genre-defining character piece about a handful of people. If this is indeed to be Hugh Jackman’s last outing as the Wolverine, then it is a perfect send off for what has been one of the best portrayed comic book characters on film. You can check out my extended review here.

There you have it. These are my favourite movies of 2017 so far. How do you feel about the list? What are some of your favourite movies of the year? Please share your thoughts in the comments below or hit me up on Facebook or Twitter and let’s carry on the conversation.

Stay Awesome!
